Course Title: Master Home Environmentalist
Course Description: The Master Home Environmentalist (MHE) training is intended to train people to become environmental health advocates for people with asthma and other respiratory conditions in the home environment. There are many ways that people can reduce their exposure to indoor pollutants, both chemical and biological. In this training participants will learn how to identify and remediate hazards in the home. By the end of the training, participants will be able to identify:
•   Sources of indoor pollutants
•   Ways to control and/or eliminate indoor pollutants
•   Strategies to reduce all allergens and irritants
•   Key changes that happen in the respiratory system because of asthma
•   The effects of chemical poisoning on children, adults, and the elderly
•   Sources of lead in the home
•   Simple steps toward more environmentally friendly landscape practices
•   Health and environmental hazards of household chemicals

This training is sponsored by the Washington State Department of Health Asthma Program in coordination with the Washington Healthy Communities Resource Center. The mission of the Asthma Program is to improve the quality of life for people with asthma by helping people learn how to manage their asthma, helping health care providers improve asthma care, and reducing asthma triggers in the environment.

The Presenter, Aileen Gagney MArch, MFA, GA-C, HHS, has a Masters Degree in Architecture, a Masters Degree in Fine Arts, is Green Advantage-Certified and a Healthy Home Specialist. She is a Certified Renovator and Certified Dust Sampling Technician. She is a National Trainer for the National Center for Healthy Housing’s Essentials for Healthy Homes Practitioners Course. Aileen is presently employed by the American Lung Association in Washington and is the Executive Director for CLEARCorpc Pacific Northwest (an AmeriCorps program) and the Director of the Master Home Environmentalist© (MHE©) program. Since the program’s inception in 1992, the MHE program has helped to make over 1500 homes, families, and especially children, healthier. Aileen is the only MHE Master Trainer in the country and has successfully trained over 23 ALA affiliates, county health departments and other organizations in the MHE program.

Note: Lunch will not be provided during these workshops. Please feel free to bring your own lunch or plan to purchase lunch at a nearby establishment. We will break for a one-hour lunch. Coffee and water will be available.
