Motivational Interviewing - Level II

  This course date has passed.
Course Number: ESD105012
Course Title: Motivational Interviewing - Level II
Course Description: Research shows that people are more motivated to make change when it's based on their own values and choices. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a style of interacting founded on the belief that people are more persuaded by what they hear themselves say than by what someone else says or tells them to do. In this Level II session, participants will deepen and strengthen their foundational MI skills learned in the Level I session, including proven techniques to help students/clients make behavior changes; assessing attitudes, beliefs and practices regarding the spirit and purpose of MI; and understanding ambivalence as the key obstacle to behavior change. Material from the 2nd edition MI guide will be presented. Some time will be spent on how to address tobacco use with specific groups, including chemical dependency groups for youth and adults. The issue of self-care or personal caretaking will also be addressed.

Jonnae Tillman has two degrees in Psychology from Seattle University and has been practicing in public health for over 15 years. For the past 11 years, she has worked with health care professionals in Snohomish County and Snohomish Health District. MI training has been her focus for the past 7 years. Jonnae consults throughout western Washington with hospitals, clinics, health districts and private businesses.

Prerequisite: Participants MUST have taken MI Level I.

Participants will be on their own for lunch.
