| Course Title: | Addressing Tobacco-Related Disparities & Health Equity: The Role of Social Determinants of Health |
| Course Description: | These training sessions are intended to serve as a follow-up to the facilitated discussions conducted during the Department of Health Tobacco Prevention and Control Program (TPCP) 2009 spring regional meetings for contractors. It is recommended that all TPCP county, ESD, tribal, and cross cultural contractors attend one of the sessions. In addition, contractors are encouraged to invite their community partners and stakeholders. Each session will continue the discussion on the social and economic factors driving tobacco-related disparities, how to frame issues of social justice and health equity around tobacco prevention and control, and how to work within organizational structures, programs, and communities to effect change. The goal of this training is to provide a baseline of understanding and competence in identifying the causes of health inequities (specifically tobacco use) as they relate to social justice and the social determinants of health. Participants will be able to compare and contrast the basic components of a “healthy” vs. “unhealthy” community; describe the challenges related to making healthy decisions about tobacco; clarify their role(s) in helping to shape healthy communities and increase health equity. Presenters: Melody Madlem, PhD., CHES, Professor. Dr. Madlem believes that the “soul” of Public Health lies in its responsibility to serve all. Meeting people where they are and inviting them to grow first requires a willingness to walk in the places where people truly “are.” One must always remember that these places are sacred ground. Jennifer M. Lehmbeck, PhD., MPH, Assistant professor. As a proponent of participatory action research, Dr. Lehmbeck’s Public Health philosophy is based on the idea that expertise is gained through the lived experience. As such, both her learning and presentation styles are based on the notion of learning through listening. Her presentations and publications have focused on a variety of social justice issues including topics such as positive youth development and participatory youth evaluation. Lunch will be provided. |
