Course Number: ESD101016
Course Title: Community Engagement at It's Best!
Course Description: The work of tobacco prevention requires cohesive efforts. When communities engage all stakeholders - schools, local organizations, businesses, government agencies, this creates a powerful network ensuring that young people receive the full benefit of tobacco prevention efforts. When this type of coalition
fails, it may be due to a few factors, but probably primarily, that the skills to manage the complex set of strategies and relationships involved in sustaining a coalition effort are not reinforced.

Join us and experience the excitement of what
can happen when collaboration takes off and engagement levels soar. There
is a perfect alignment of collaboration skills with one of the most well researched theories for risk and protective-focused prevention: the Social Development Strategy (SDS). Using innovative, interactive modules, we will build skills that drive a successful prevention initiative and experientially understand the power of the SDS. We'll fit all of this learning into a thoroughly enjoyable and meaningful day using ice breakers and teambuilding activities for youth and adults.

Participants will experience developing common vision (shared mental models); understand and tap the power of strong planning; explore collaboration with adequate common purpose; look at diversity beyond the usual awareness of ethnic or socioeconomic backgrounds; review effective management of dissent and conflict among members; discuss shared decision-making and consensus; and practice clear communication.

Kenya Masala, owner and director of Source Consulting Group, is a nationally known community and human development consultant, certified teacher, and curriculum specialist with an active consulting practice.
