Motivational Interviewing - Level 1
| Course Number: | ESD113016 |
| Course Title: | Motivational Interviewing - Level 1 |
| Course Description: | Research shows that people are more motivated to make change when it's based on their own values and choices. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a style of interacting founded on the belief that people are more persuaded by what they hear themselves say than by what someone else says or tells them to do. Participants will learn proven techniques to help students/clients make behavior changes; be able to assess attitudes, beliefs and practices regarding the spirit and purpose of MI; demonstrate skills for performing at least two specific MI techniques in the context of their jobs; and understanding ambivalence as the key obstacle to behavior change. This training will also cover the three reasons why people don't change, how those trying to help can impede the process, steps to helping students/clients resolve ambivalence, and how to identify in 5 seconds or less (it's true!) who is ready to change and who is not. Since this training is sponsored and funded by the Washington State Department of Health Tobacco Prevention & Control Program, participants will be provided with information about the Washington State Tobacco Quit Line and encouraged to promote tobacco cessation with their students, families, patients or clients. Presenter Jonnae Tillman has two degrees in Psychology from Seattle University and has been practicing in public health for 20 years. For the past 14 years, she has worked with health care professionals in Snohomish County and Snohomish Health District. MI training has been her focus for the past 8 years. Jonnae consults throughout Washington with hospitals, clinics, health districts and private businesses and is a member of MINT (Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers); the international organization of professionals trained by Drs. Miller and Rollnick, authors of Motivational Interviewing, 1993, 2000. Lunch will be provided. |
