| Course Description: | This session provides professionals with the opportunity to explore their own attitudes and beliefs about race and culture in order to enhance cross-cultural relationships with colleagues, students and families. Participants will learn the framework for becoming a culturally competent professional by examining four components: awareness, knowledge, skills and advocacy/action. By the end of the training participants will learn the four components to becoming a culturally competent professional, gain insight into personal biases and assumptions that can prohibit effective cross-cultural relationships, develop specific cross-cultural communication skills, and learn strategies to create a culturally responsive environment in order to build positive relationships with multicultural youth, families and colleagues. Melia LaCour has over 10 years of experience working within the public school system designing and implementing services to support school personnel and multicultural students and families over a variety of issues. She is a skilled strategic thinker, successful in designing, planning and implementing a wide range of educational programs specifically designed to improve academic outcomes for multicultural youth. Melia currently works as the Equity in Education Program Manager for Puget Sound Educational Service District and has worked there as a Prevention Resource Coordinator in the past. She has also worked as a Child and Family Therapist, a Case Aide, an Assistant Crisis Worker/Crisis Worker, and an Individual Treatment Aid. Participants will be on their own for lunch. |

| Intended Audience: | This training is primarily intended for individuals working in tobacco prevention and control, either as contractors of the Washington State Department of Health Tobacco Prevention and Control Program, or key stakeholders and partners, including although not necessarily limited to, school and community partner organizations, medical partner organizations, student assistance professionals, teachers, administrators, and school staff concerned with tobacco prevention and control. |
