Motivational Interviewing Level 1

  This course date has passed.
Course Number: ESD113012
Course Title: Motivational Interviewing Level 1
Course Description: "Why don't they just do what we say?!!!!" (take medication, stop smoking, lose weight, start exercising...). Research shows that people are more motivated to make change when it's based on their own values and choices. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a style of interacting founded on the belief that people are more persuaded by what they hear themselves say than by what someone else says or tells them to do. Learn how to help your clients to make behavior changes without handing them a brochure and telling them what to do - since we know people don't seem to like that! Participants will learn proven techniques to help clients make behavior changes; be able to assess attitudes, beliefs and practices regarding the spirit and purpose of MI; demonstrate skills for performing at least two specific MI techniques in the context of their jobs; and understand ambivalence as the key obstacle to behavior change. Training will also cover three reasons why people don't change; how those trying to help can impede the process; steps to helping clients resolve ambivalence; and especially, how to identify in 5 seconds or less (it's true!) who is ready to change and who is NOT! Jonnae Tillman has two degrees in Psychology and Addictions Studies from Seattle University and has been practicing in public health for 17 years. For the past 12 years, Jonnae has worked with health care professionals in Snohomish County for Snohomish Health District. She consults throughout Western Washington with hospitals, clinics, health districts, and private businesses in Motivational Interviewing. Lunch will be provided.
