Course Number: CD008
Course Title: Integrating Nicotine Dependence Interventions into Chemical Dependency Treatment
Course Description: This course will assist substance abuse treatment agency administrators and staff in starting the process of integrating nicotine treatment within their programs.

Many chemical dependency treatment providers are beginning to take up the challenge to address tobacco dependence in their programs for compelling reasons:

1. Tobacco is a drug of dependence.

2. Tobacco dependence exacts a devastating toll on people in treatment and recovery from other chemical dependencies.

3. Tobacco dependence is closely related to other chemical dependencies.

4. It is safe to treat tobacco dependence at the same time as other chemical dependencies.

5. Treating tobacco dependence at the same time as other chemical dependencies may improve treatment outcomes.

This course will provide administrators and staff with information on the latest research on tobacco dependence treatment integration, the recommended steps to begin the process, and sample policies and practices. A review of the science of nicotine addiction, and how it is similar and different to other addictions will be covered, in addition to the assessment tools and treatment planning suggested in integrating treatment. Pharmacological supports available to aid in treatment will be covered in depth.
Lunch will be provided.

Deb Drandoff, MEd, will be providing this training. She manages the Tobacco Prevention Resource Center and has prior experience as an administrator of chemical dependency treatment programs.
